Joe Biden’s departure from the upcoming presidential election was breaking news on July 21st, 2024. After all, a candidate rejecting their party's nomination has not occurred since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. Speculation regarding who Democrats will summon to battle Donald Trump was immediate. After an anticipated endorsement from Biden, all eyes turned to Kamala Harris.
It’s likely unfair to judge Kamala based on her time as VP. To better understand what drives Kamala Harris, look to her days as a prosecutor and district attorney. Harris is a progressive reformer and ally for working people. She is a biracial woman and vocal supporter of reproductive freedoms. She wore a bedazzled rainbow jacket to Pride Fest in San Francisco and officiated a gay couple's wedding.
In high school, Kamala learned that her friend was being sexually abused; this inspired her to later pursue and prosecute cases of child sexual assault. As Attorney General of California, she defended the Affordable Care Act and won billions of dollars for veterans taken advantage of by for-profit companies.
Her accomplishments are impressive and a testament to her unwavering commitment to the people. Equally as important, she is confident in her ability to succeed Biden. With all this in mind, the following question remains: Is America ready for a female president, especially one who is a woman of color?
According to CBS News polls, 79% of Democratic voters approve of Harris as the Democratic nominee. Users on TikTok produced edits and sounds that humorously supported Kamala. This casual campaigning is important as it humanizes her while also serving as an introduction for younger voters. Arguably, the most important endorsement yet came from Nancy Pelosi, who endorsed Kamala with “immense pride.”
So much is at stake in November, exemplified by the unveiling of Conservatives' Project 2025. If you have not yet viewed this, I urge you to google Project 2025. Prepare yourself for 1,000 pages of fascism sanctioned by presumed family values. As Kamala and her team work on campaigning and fundraising, she will also prepare for her debate against Donald Trump in September. As a former prosecutor, this should be easy for her. She has prosecuted people like her opponent before.
On November 5th, I sincerely hope you go to the polls and cast your vote. Vote for the changes you wish to see and the freedoms you want to keep. To quote from Kamala Harris’s book, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, "We have to act with fierce urgency. Justice demands it."
