Gilmore Girls premiered on October 5th of 2000 becoming an instant hit for the Warner Brothers Network. Set within the picturesque, small town of Stars Hollow, Gilmore Girls chronicles the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Lorelai has an incredibly charismatic personality and free-spirited attitude. Having left home at 17 years old after becoming pregnant with Rory, she retains a problematic relationship with her mother and father. Rory, Lorelai’s daughter, is the child her grandparents desired, simply a generation late. Intelligent, reserved, and focused, Rory differs from her mother in many respects. Their contrasting personalities ignite witty and fast-paced dialogue which differentiates the show from other TV dramedies.
Today, Gilmore Girls lives on Netflix, consistently achieving Top 10 viewership numbers, especially during the autumn months. Recently, social media became enamored with the show, with users sharing tweets of this nature: “Felt a chilly breeze... Time for my annual Gilmore Girls rewatch.” and, “It’s finally Gilmore Girls Season." I began to ponder, why does Gilmore Girls lend itself to autumnal rewatches?
When the pool closes and pumpkin flavors return, a cozy feeling synonymous with autumn transpires. I'll set the scene: a 2000s indie song plays and autumn leaves cover the sidewalk. The Gilmore Girls stroll through town, coffee in hand, Lorelai in a stylish jean jacket with fur trim, and Rory in a neat school uniform and hat. Nearly every episode features Rory in school, further lending the show to non-summer months. The impressive costumes and set design encapsulate the feeling of fall. Disregarding fall-specific episodes featuring Halloween and Thanksgiving, Gilmore Girls still manufactures a specific ‘fall’ feeling. The uniformity of the show’s overall tone is impressive, especially when you factor in 7 seasons and 154 episodes.
The Gilmore Girls live a privileged life, complemented by strong friendships and frequent budding romances. Their days conform to a routine, yet they never seem plaughed by boredom. It seems that with a cup of coffee and each other, the world (or Stars Hollow) is Lorelai and Rory’s alone. Evidently, Gilmore Girls and Fall are in fact, becoming accomplices. When the world slows down for fall, the Gilmore Girls rapport speeds up.
