Big Apple Bites of Fashion: An Overview

Writer's picture: Fiona KelleyFiona Kelley

This year, I was lucky enough to experience a few days of New York City’s renowned Christmas scene. The city boasts colorful lights, omnipresent holiday music, and general joyful vibes. Me and my family bundled up and in true New Yorker fashion, walked everywhere as our form of transport. As I walked through the streets, I observed the outfits and stylistic choices of the people around me. Seeing personality expressed through clothing and accessories is entertaining and NYC tourists and locals did not disappoint. This is not surprising, as I would accept nothing less from a city with the headquarters of Vogue and endless retail options. Clothing is so much more than protection and warmth. It's an insight into culture and one’s self-expression. Fashion can help us observe history and even glance into the future of human advancement. On that note, I present to you mental notes on the pieces that caught my eye in NYC.

Fur Coats

Satisfying and soft, fur can protect you from harsh winter weather. Fur clothing has been found in the tombs of ancient royalty, an indication of affluence and status. Today, fur coats still project elegance and can instantly elevate an outfit. Unfortunately, sporting this material can get you some disapproving stares. According to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), approximately 100 million animals are killed every year for their fur. Confining animals to cages and taking their lives for a coat is extremely repugnante. Therefore, it’s important to ensure your fur products are certified vegan before you participate in this historic trend.

 Mini UGGs

In the early 2000s, Uggs were on the feet of celebrities and teens. Trends evolved and the shoe fell out of style until recently, making their triumphant return. Primarily thanks to social media influencers and models, these little brown boots were on millions of Christmas lists. In NYC, I noticed Uggs complimenting athleisure and dressy outfits alike. These boots aren’t flashy or revolutionary; their hype comes instead from their comfort and ease to slip on.

Cheetah Print

In the 20s and 30s, cheetah print was seen only in the movies on Hollywood starlets. It wasn't until the 1960s that cheetah print became in vogue. From Jackie Kennedy to The Spice Girls to Michelle Obama, this controversial print is inclusive and multifaceted. The allure of cheetah print is likely rooted in its provocative and arguable elegance. From hats to coats, cheetah print persists on the NYC streets.

Statement RED

This fiery hue radiates confidence and power. According to scientists, bright colors like red release dopamine to your brain. Red statement pieces are all over the runways and streets, perhaps a fashionable attempt to combat seasonal depression. From large sweaters to flats with bows, the color red is shockingly easy to style, despite its flashy boldness. One could say that the color red is less of a trend and more of a lifestyle we should all aspire to achieve.
